The Different Types Of Roofing Styles And Their Benefits

Over the years, there have been many different styles and techniques within roofing. Of course, we have been building roofs for thousands of years and have moved technology further and further with each passing year. Now, in the modern world, we stand at the brink of a new revolution again as technology takes its next giant leap into the future. Still, though, roofing remains just as important now as it was a thousand years ago and you still have the same few basic options as you did back then. So, what options are available to you and, perhaps more importantly, which option is the best?

The types of roofs

In short, there are ten main roofing options in the UK. Without making this article too listicle, it might well be useful to quickly run through the ten options. The ten main roofing types in the UK are:

  • Gable roof

  • Hip

  • Dutch

  • Mansard roof

  • Flat roof

  • Shed roof

  • Butterfly roof

  • Gambrel roof

  • Dormer roof

  • M Shaped

This list is, of course, extensive, so going through them all might be a touch too long for this blog. Instead, we’ll cover a few of the main ones and discuss why they have become so popular.

Gable roof

First of all, we have the gable roof. This is the classic roof seen across the whole of the UK. There are hundreds of thousands of homes in the country that use this design and there's no wonder, really. It is reliable, easy to build, and lasts a lifetime. Essentially, it looks like your average roof, with flat triangular walls on either side with a pitched angle.

Hip roof

While this design is not quite as popular as the gable roof, it is still fairly common in the UK and is a touch more modern that the previous option. The two styles do look fairly similar; the only difference is the flat side walls of the gable roof are replaced with slightly pitched tiled sides.

Dormer roof

In recent years, as the fight for space in the urban landscape has become more and more fierce, homeowners have been trying everything they can to get the most out of their homes. With this in mind, the popularity of the dormer roof has completely exploded. Much like the hip roof, this design takes much of its inspiration from the gable roof, though there is one distinct difference. The dormer roof has small dormer windows which extend out from the pitched roof. This gives the rooms upstairs more space and, perhaps more importantly, more light.
